Ashford Hughes is Assistant Business Manager for the Southeast Laborers District Council, local 386, a labor union which represents men and women in the construction industry in seven states across the Ohio Valley region as well as some public sector workers. In his capacity he serves as a political coordinator, community and worker organizer on multiple labor issues and campaigns. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science from Tennessee State University. Prior to joining the Laborers’ District Council, Ashford served as the Political Director for the Tennessee Democratic Party. He also served as Campaign Manager for Council Woman Megan Barry in 2011. Since 2005, he has worked as a senior political staffer on numerous candidate and issue based campaigns in Tennessee, South Carolina, Virginia, Mississippi, Florida and Massachusetts. His main focus has been political strategy, candidate development, organizational and community development.
Ashford serves as a member on the following Non-Profit Boards; The Martha O’Bryan Center, Fifty Forward, Nashville Emerging Leaders and the Tennessee Equality Project while also serving as Community Engagement Co-Chair on Metro’s Government’s Nashville Next initiative. He is a founding member of the Nashville New Leaders Council, where he serves as Chapter Co-Director. This is an organization that seeks to train, educate and empower the next generation of progressive political and professional industry leaders.
Ashford also represents his local union while serving as a Board Member for N.O.A.H. (Nashville Organized for Action and Hope) N.O.A.H is a thirty-eight member interfaith and multi-racial organization which seeks power to positively address issues affecting the entire Nashville community.
His past times include reading, fitness training, fishing, basketball and community organizing.
